Your local shelters can always use help.  Whether it be donation of goods (food, toys, equipment, bedding), financial aid, or physical assistance (stuffing envelops, painting, minor repairs, walking the tenants). Take the time to drop by and ask what you can do.  It's easy and very rewarding.

If you don't know how to find shelters in your area, try looking in the yellow pages under Animal Shelters or Animal Rescue.

Pets.com, arguably the Internet's largest virtual pet store, reaches countless numbers of people every day. Instead of providing resources to help visitors to its site locate local animal shelters and rescue groups, it provides links to search engines for breeders! It is ironic that a site dedicated to catering to the needs of companion animals and those who care for them would, in fact, perpetuate the already overwhelming overpopulation problem.

Shelters all over the country are forced to euthanize more than 18 million animals (a large percentage of whom are purebreds) every year, simply because there are not enough good homes for all of them, and breeding is the heart of the problem. At the same time, unbelievably irresponsible and greedy breeders (including puppy mills) are allowed to treat animals as expendable commodities.

Please tell Pets.com that you, and others who truly care about animals, will not spend your money on products from its site until the links to breeders are removed. Encourage Pets.com to become part of the solution by providing sources of information about local animal shelters and breed rescue groups, to help people make the most informed and responsible decision regarding where and how to add an animal to their family.
